76 HOW TO OPERATE
j
Catalytic Converter
This vehicle is equip
ped with a catalytic converter
in the exhaust system. The converter react with car-
bon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides
to convert them into c
arbon dioxide, water, nitrogen
and o xygen resulting in much cleaner exhaust gases
to be discharged into the atmosphere.
For proper operatio
n of the catalytic c onverter, the
following cautions must be observed.
WARNING
Operating or parking the vehicle near
flammable materials can cause a fire, and
can result in property damage or severe per-
sonal injury. Do not idle or park your vehicle
in an area where tall or dry vegetation, or
other flammable materials could come into
contact with the muffler or exhaust pipe.
WARNING
The engine and exhaust system get ex-
tremely hot during normal operation and can
cause serious burns.
Never touch a hot engine, exhaust pipe, or
muffler during operation or after stopping
the engine.
Use only unleaded gasoline. Never use leaded
gasoline. Leaded gasoline significantly reduces
the capability of the catalytic converter.
Do not coast the v
ehicle w ith the ignition switch
and/or engine stop switch off. Do not attempt to
start the engine by rolling the vehicle if the battery
is discharged.
Do not operate the vehicle with the
engine of the cylinder misfiring. Under this condi-
tions unburned air/fuel mixture flowing out of en-
gine excessiv
ely accelerates reaction in the con-
verter allowing the converter to overheat and be-
come damaged when the engine is hot, or reduces
converter pe
rformance when the engine is cold.
NOTICE
In order to protect the emission control parts,
do not turn off the ignition switch when the
vehicle is in motion.
