The further below freezing the temperature drops, the shorter the oil change interval should be.
Water vapor is a normal by product of combustion in any engine. During cold weather operation,
some water vapor condenses to liquid form on the cool metal surfaces inside the engine. In
freezing weather this water will become slush or ice. Over time, accumulated slush or ice may
block the oil lines and cause engine damage.
If the engine is run frequently and allowed to thoroughly warm up, most of this water will become
vapor again and will be blown out through the crankcase breather.
If the engine is not run frequently and not allowed to thoroughly warm up, this water will
accumulate, mix with the engine oil and form a sludge that is harmful to the engine.
Oil Cooler
Motorcycles with a Twin Cam 103 or larger engine are equipped with a factory installed oil cooler.
Always keep the cooler clean and free from dirt and debris. This will help maintain maximum
cooling efficiency.

1. Park the motorcycle on a level surface leaning on the jiffy stand.
2. See Transmission Dipstick Location. Remove the transmission lubricant dipstick. Wipe
the dipstick clean.
3. Insert dipstick into transmission. Thread dipstick in until O ring makes contact with case. Do
not tighten.
4. See Transmission Dipstick Lubricant Level. Remove the dipstick. Check lubricant level
on dipstick.
Mixing mineral based lubricants with SYN 3 in the
transmission can damage the transmission. (00452b)
5. The level should be between the A and F marks. Add lubricant if necessary. Refer to
Recommended Lubricant.
6. Install the dipstick. Tighten to 25 75 in lbs (2.8 8.5 Nm).
